Shenandoah Day 4

Day 55 Tuesday April 23
Miles hiked: 23.2
Total miles: 934.2
Number of hikers we saw: 3 day hikers

We left the warm bunkhouse this morning at 6:30. Mike had saved some wood so we could be warm while packing! It froze last night so it was hard to step out into the cold morning.

As we get warmed up, we strip down layer by layer. It was a cool day today. It clouded up and then cleared up.

The best part of today was stopping at Big Meadows Wayside. We got there about 9:50 so we had tall stacks of pancakes and 2 eggs. They dogs shared an order of link sausage followed up with a can of Vienna sausages. We ate our brunch outside so it was a pancake picnic!

We had some great views today!

We are staying at the Byrd Nest 3 Shelter tonight by ourselves. We set the tent up in the shelter to stay warmer as it will freeze again tonight.

Your setup in the Byrds Nest shelter looks cozy! Tomorrow you should pass the southern junction of the Tuscarora Trail with the AT. The TT is a 250 mile trail originally built as a western alternative to the existing AT through the Washington DC area due to land development concerns before the protection of the AT was completed by the National Park Service - http://www.patc.us/hiking/destinations/tuscarora.You'll meet up with the TT again at Deans Gap in PA. PATC also maintains this entire trail and has been building shelters along it for a number of years.

I bet Sara is already cozy in bed. That looks like a really comfortable hut or shelter.
