Miles hiked: 21.0
Total miles: 1009.7
Number of hikers we saw: too many to count
We got on the trail this morning at 6:05. We knew it would be a long rocky day.
We had the roller coaster today.
It is a 13.5 mile section of trail with 13 ups and downs. Since it was cool, it was not that bad.
Here we are on a water break near Sam Moore Shelter.

We met some great people today. Some of them had heard of us from a section hiker we passed yesterday.
Bear's Den Hostel turned into a disaster. I had the dogs on their leashes in the backyard. Mike went to open the door and a very large dog charged out of the hostel and attacked Lily. He had her down and was going after her. Mike grabbed him by the scruff and drug him off. She is fine but we were shocked that the No dogs in the hostel sign didn't apply to the volunteer cleaning it.
We did get some ice cream as the woman was too embarrassed to be a hard ass about the store hours after her dog attacked.
Right after leaving the Bear's Den we saw our first black rat snake.

We crossed into a new state today, West Virginia. We loved our time in Virginia.

It wasn't far into West Virginia and we crossed the 1000 mile mark. It really feels like a great accomplishment to have made it this far.

We hiked on and stopped in at the Blackburn Trail Center. It is a nice old log home that can be rented by PATC members. We got a beer and some cake pops from the people staying there.
We stopped at the David Lesser Memorial Shelter. We had not been here long when a young boy and his dad had an accident with their camp stove. The boy was badly burned on his foot. The ambulance was called to evacuate him.
We are camped in our tent near 2 high school senior girls and their dad. They are on a shake down trip for their senior project hike from Pearisburg to Daleville.

Congratulations on the 1,000 miles! That is a HUGE accomplishment. That sounds like a stressful day with the dog attack and the little boy's burned foot. I hope everyone is doing well.
Wow - quite a day
You look so healthy!
It IS a great accomplishment, especially in less than 2 months, considering the crazy weather you've had to put up with.
WOW! 1,000 miles; incredible progress! You deserve burgers, fries, and shakes. Luc says, "Thanks for watching out for his girls."
