Virginia, a New State

Day 31 Saturday March 30
Miles hiked: 11.3
Total miles: 468.0
Number of hikers we saw: 0

We got up early so we could hit Damascus with plenty of time to resupply. We left the shelter at 6:35.

There were a few rolling hills and then we crossed the state line. The sun was even shining. Mike said that was an omen.

We are staying at Ruby's Rest. It is a cute cottage in the Buckley's backyard. What a wonderful place. In my opinion, the best stay yet!

We got to see Grandma Gatewood's sneakers at Mt Rogers Outfitters.

What an amazing woman. It would be so neat to hear her stories of hiking the trail.

You two look great. You've come through the horrific weather of the past couple of weeks so well (we were really feeling for you). Now that spring has sprung, and you are out of the deep south and into Virginia hopefully the weather will continue to improve. Our thoughts are with you (and of course the dogs) for easier days on the trail ahead. All the best, Kathleen and Earl, Denver, CO.

There's another pair of Grandma Gatewood's sneakers at the AT Museum in Pine Grove Furnace, PA (atmuseum.org). Her daughter gave a talk at the museum dedication in June of 2010. It was pretty interesting. She was one tough woman!

Now that you guys have been on the trail for a full month, it's about time that you (and the dogs) got your trail names. There's no reason you can't give them to each other since you've been traveling together for a month now and you must have thought of something befitting. How about it? :-)
