A Big Day on the AT

Day
Miles hiked: 18.4
Total miles: 144.0
Number of hikers we saw: 4

We had a calm, starry night and a beautiful pink sunrise. We hit the trail at 7:00.

We saw this fire lookout platform on Wesser Bald.

It was 12 miles and a long steep downhill into the Nantahala Outdoor Center. It sits at about 1700 feet elevation.

We enjoyed ice cream bars and a coke in the sunshine. We resupply end our food. A really nice worker in the outfitter store gave us dig food as there was none in the store.

We started the big 3000 foot climb out of the gorge to Swim Bald and then downhill a mile to the Sassafras Shelter. We are glad to have this climb done!

Here's a trail marker cut into a sawed log.

It was a great day on the AT!

18 miles and a re-supply at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Impressive. Have to go put your location on the map. Love the log. That is very cool.

Hi Mike and Lynn, we posted a comment re: your Friday 8 March AT news, but because we are novices re: blogs and all, I don't know if you will get that message now that it is 9 March; thus, you are leading us to places that we have not gone before. Sounds like you had great day!! Earl and Kathleen

I hope y'all tried some of the homemade soups and freshly baked bread at the NOC restaurant. They are awesome. We love that place, and rafting down the Nantahala River. Come back and try all that some time!
