Miles hiked: 15.5
Total miles: 74.1
Number of hikers we saw: 2
We woke up at Trey Mountain Shelter and it was 15 degrees with a howling wind!
We hit the trail at 7:54. Today we hiked up and down many hills.
We had to be resourceful and fix one of the shoe lace holders on Mike's new shoes. I ended up sewing it and it seemed to hold.
The sun came out and the really warmed up. On the last hill of the day we went with just shirts, shorts and long johns which we didn't really need! It was a far cry from wearing all the clothes we have!
The best news of the day is we have Plum Orchard Gap Shelter to ourselves, so far!

No bad days when you are out hiking!

Did you get to have the shelter all to yourselves? Sounds like you have out-hiked a lot of people who started in front of you. The weather sounds pretty difficult overall. Winter-spring-then serious winter again.
I am so proud of you guys partly because it sounds like you are keeping a pretty reasonable pace (by your standards) and not adhering to a rigid preconceived number of miles like pushing on to 20 miles everyday.
I finished "Walking with Spring" by Earl Shaffer and am almost done with "Just Passin Thru" by Winton Porter of Mountain Crossings.
Here's a brief salute to your trip courtesy of Earl Shaffer:
"The flowers bloom, the songbirds sing
And though it sun or rain
I walk the mountain tops with Spring
From Georgia north to Maine."
We had the shelter until about 5:45 when 2 young guys rolled in. One was 18 and one was 23. They were fun to visit with!
We feel good about the miles we are covering. It seems as though we have bridged ahead through several waves of hikers. The group we were with last night all started Feb. 23.
Just wondering where you spent Monday and Tuesday?
