We got up and packed in a toasty warm cabin. We started to hike at 7:50. The rust thing was to cross the Nolichucky River Bridge. We are surprised at the size of the rivers. They are big!
We walked up river for about a mike and a half. Then we headed up a stream drainage for a longways.
We enjoyed lunch on a dry patch where we crossed the highway.

We walked through the dense spruce forest at the top of Unaka Mountain.
We meet 2 southbound hikers today-U Haul and Biggy Smalls. We started south in August. They hiked through the winter but took 56 zero days at friends and family's homes to avoid bad weather during the winter. They hope to finish in 3 to 4 more weeks.
We are staying at Cherry Gap Shelter by ourselves this evening. We are listening to an owl hooting. Tomorrow we will head out early as we climb Roan Mountain.

The doggies look good and content. The frustrating thing about Spring is how it comes and goes. Soon it will be here to stay and you won't have to hike to avoid the snow.
