Today we left the Fontana Hilton (shelter) and hiked across Fontana Dam and into the Great Smokies Mountains National Park. It was a 3000 foot climb to get up into the mountains. The first half of the day was all fog with frost crystals covering all the tree branches.
We saw some unusual moss and lichens.
Finally, the fog burned off and we had some really nice views.
This is looking ahead at Rocky Top.
On top of Thunderhead Mountain we passed the point on the trail where we went under 2000 miles to go to Maine.
We are staying at Derrick Knob Shelter with a group of college students on spring break they has a fire going in the shelter's fireplace so it is warm and cozy. Today was our longest day so far on the AT.
We climbed over 5500 feet elevation today. Tomorrow we climb Clingman's Dome the highest point on the whole trail.

Looks like a beautiful day...eventually. I hope you get more of them!!
Beautiful photos. The frost looks like there must have been strong sideways winds. It was 60 degrees in Missoula one day this week, but on the downside, the ticks are out.
