Well, we didn't get the shelter to ourselves. Two young guys, Snowman and Skinny Jeans showed about 5:45. They were a lot of fun to talk with. We had an awesome campfire as they had recently replaced the rod and there were lots of the old cedar shingles.
It started to rain about 6:00 am. We got on the trail at 7:53. There was a tough uphill right away. We got to the Georgia/ North Carolina state line in a thick fog. One state down, 13 to go.
This is us at the state line I told you it was foggy!
As the day progressed so did the rain. We arrived at Carter Gap Shelter in a downpour. The shelter was full so we waited for the rain to let up. There even was some thunder.
We set up the tent. It was just getting dark as we settled in for the night. We had a cold dinner in the tent. At 9:30 it started to snow. It snowed and blew the whole night,a regular blizzard.

Shelters tend to be full when you get there in the rain. One of the hiking corollaries of Murphy's Law.
