Half Way

Day 65 Friday May 3
Miles hiked: 16.9
Total miles: 1097.3
Number of hikers we saw: 17

We left the shelter at 6:35. It was a cool morning but very sunny.

We were surprised with easy, nice trail all morning.

We met Steve and Tess at Big Flat on Shippensburg Rd. They had come to hike with us! We were really excited as other hikers have been telling us about their families coming to hike with them. We got to have this same wonderful experience of sharing the trail with family.

We hiked to the PATC Michener Cabin that Steve and Tess help care for. It is an awesome cabin.

We enjoyed a great lunch that Tess packed for us! Yes, a real lunch, not granola bars!

We hiked on to Woodrow Rd. which is the AT midpoint for 2013.

Further along the trail is the official midpoint with a very fancy new sign.

Then it was on to Pine Grove Furnace State Park and the Half Gallon Challenge. The store was closed but the owner was there loading the pop machine. When he heard that we were thru hikers and Mike wanted to take the challenge he opened the store for us.

Mike got his container of chocolate, of course. We set our timers and he dug in!

It wasn't long before the spoon was scooping!

Sure enough, he met the challenge and did it in 17:46!

A true champion!

We drove back to Koeppen's for hot showers, some laundry and a cool snack of mixed berry fruit salad. This evening they took us out to pizza. We are feeling very pampered. We will miss this part of the trail, that's for sure!

Yay! Halfway!!! It's hard to believe Mike ate all that ice cream. Did you even try it, Lynn? Maybe I will try it. Ralph has eaten 1/2 gallon+ in a day, but never in 17 minutes! I'll let you know if I try it, and my sickly outcome.
